While out doing some Ontario back road exploring on a recent road trip I came across this old log homestead. On the property is a small barn and an old log cabin. Its hard to know the story of exactly what happened here and what circumstance led to the abandonment of this old homestead. In the mid 1800’s there where many homesteaders setting up small farms with land provided by the government. Most started with a modest small log home and a small barn. As the family prospered the log cabin was replaced with a larger wood clad house and the old log cabin was dismantled or re-purposed as a storage shed or chick coop ect. In this particular case I believe that due to the poor, wet and swampy land located in behind prevented the farm from prospering and at some point the family would of had to abandoned it to seek work and prosperity elsewhere. This is just a guess of course, but you see many of these small abandoned homesteads in northern Ontario where the land is rocky and not suited for large farm operations.
The location and GPS coordinates of this old abandoned log cabin and log homestead can be found on our Abandoned places in Canada Map.
