The screaming tunnel located not to far from Niagara Falls Ontario has been said to be one of the most haunted places in the world. This limestone tunnel is well over a century old as it was built around 1900. Many believed it to be an old train tunnel but in reality it was designed to be a drainage tunnel and tunnel for local farmers to move livestock under the tracks above. There have been several movie scenes shot in and around the tunnel, the most recent being “Limestone Burning” There are many variants of the legend of this tunnel but they all involve a young girl burning to death within the tunnel. One version states that the girl ran out on fire from a burning farmhouse to the screaming tunnel where she perished. Another local legend claims the girls was chased into the tunnel by her enraged father who doused her with fuel and lit her one fire, he was distraught that he had recently lost custody of her.
Legend has it if you light a match in the tunnel it will be blown out by the ghost of the little girls and sometime screaming can be heard. I have been to the tunnel several time and have never witnessed any screaming, however I have tried the match trick several times and most times it does go out. I am sure this is due to the hight winds that always seem to go through the tunnel. Here are some photos of our last trip to the Screaming Tunnel.
