Old Abandoned Decaying Train Station

Published

on

I posted this abandoned train station earlier this summer and recently did a revisit of the location to get some more photos as the rumour grapevine has it that this old abandoned train station will be demolish soon. While I was there I did notice that a large telephone pole at the rear of the building has been removed and some of the wire disconnected. This could be preparation for demolishing the old decaying building. Here are the photos from my most recent visit.

The location of this old abandoned train station can be found on our Abandoned Places in Ontario Map.

Abandoned Train Station in Ingersoll

Published

on

Finally this weekend I was able to get out and explore the abandoned train station in Ingersoll, Ontario. This has been on my list for a while now and I new it was important to get out soon as this building may be razed in the coming months, the town of Ingersoll last year has asked CN to either demolish it or restore it. The town is concerned of its deteriorating condition as it could pose a danger. The building is listed on the town’s Municipal Heritage Inventory, however it hasn’t been designated under the Ontario Heritage Act or the Heritage Railway Stations Protection Act. Due to the style of the building and it decaying condition they most likely will just level the building instead of trying to restore or move it, what a tragedy that will be!

A brief history of the abandoned Ingersoll train station: The station was built in 1886 by the Great Western Railway which was later purchased by the Grand Trunk Railway. In 1920 it was taken over by the newly merged Canadian National Railway. In 1979 VIA took over the line and had no interest in purchasing the Train Station, instead they built there own smaller facility nearby. The train station was abandoned and as been decaying ever since. It was said that the property and building were offered to the town of Ingersoll at some point for the purchase price of $1 but was decline due to the funding it would take to restore the ageing structure.

Photographing this building was bitter-sweet for me as I do very much love old decaying buildings, but saddening to see such a heritage rich structure being reclaimed by mother nature. These photos were taken May 30, 2015.
