Haunted Ontario Asylum

Published

This weekend I did a revisit to the old insane asylum in London Ontario. I really enjoy visiting this place, the old infirmary building is all that remains from the original massive 1870’s complex that was demolished many years ago. It is said to be haunted and many paranormal enthusiast claim it’s due to many deaths that took place on the ground from medical experimentation and botched lobotomies. Now I don’t know about any of that, what I do know is that its such a surreal place to visit. So far this building although in derelict condition has not been demolish and hopefully one day gets re-purposed. On the property is a newer and now also abandoned psychiatric hospital that was built in the 1960’s and closed last year. A very interesting place to visit and explore.

The location of this haunted asylum in Ontario is located on our Ontario Abandoned Places Locations Map.

Western Counties Health and Occupational Centre

Located in behind the new Parkwood mental health complex is a series of old buildings that once were part of a large military veterans psychiatric hospital called Westminster Hospital that was established in 1918 to treat WWI veterans and later WWII veterans. The Westminster Military Psychiatric Hospital was located in London Ontario and was a massive complex at the corner of Wellington Street and Commissioners Road. The original buildings on the South side of Commissioners have long been demolished, however a small group of buildings that opened in 1946 known as Western Counties Health and Occupational Centre still exist today. This complex was comprised of several cottage style buildings and were used to house veterans who needed psychiatric care but were able to manage on there own. Many of the building in this complex have been demolish, a few have been re-purposed. One building remains abandoned and in disrepair it is call the Wellington Pavilion. This building supposedly has a bowling alley in the basement, however I can not confirm that as I did now enter the building. There are plan to restore and re-purpose this marvellous building. I have read that there are many underground tunnels that still exist today that connected all the demolished buildings and possibly even ran under Commissioners Road to the original Westminster Hospital now part of the New Victoria hospital complex.

As you walk around the property you can see the foundations of the other buildings that were demolish, its reported that the foundations will be preserved and incorporated into the newly redeveloped area. The location of Western Counties Health and Occupational Centre and the Wellington Pavilion can be found on our abandoned locations map.
